Gaumer

A surname.

Proper noun

  1. A surname.

Origin

From the German Gaumer, which referred to a person who functioned as a moral censor or supervisor in an official capacity. The German surname is a derivative of the verb gaumen (“to protect, to defend; to care for”), a term now limited to Switzerland. This verb in turn comes from Middle High German goumen, from Old High German goumen, from Proto-Germanic *gaumijaną (“to heed, notice, observe, keep”). The verb is ultimately a cognate of the obsolete English verb yeme (“to observe, to pay attention”).
