Proper noun
- A suburban village in the borough of Sutton, Greater London, on the border with Surrey (OS grid ref TQ2463).
Origin
The earliest alleged form is Cegeham in 727, referencing a prior land grant from 675. From this, Eilert Ekwall proposes an origin from Old English *ceg + hām, where the first element is from a Germanic root possibly meaning "stump". While the 727 document is of dubious authenticity, the name Cegham or Ceiham is attested in various other sources, such as a will from c. 950.
Derived
